The CVMA released a statement that the association has revised it's previous position on the onychectomy- better known as declawing- of domestic cats. The statement reads that explicitly state that the CVMA “opposes elective and non-therapeutic Partial Digital Amputation (PDA), commonly known as declawing or onychectomy, of domestic cats.”

There are many other measures cat owners can take to deter their feline friend from scratching furniture. There are deterrent sprays on the market, like Bitter Apple, that you can use on items your kitty likes to scratch. Soft Paws are another great option- they are plastic nail tips that you apply to your cats nails, and they even come in fun colours! Verbal correction should always be used when training a cat not to scratch. Scratching is normal behaviour in cats, and cat owners need to embrace their cat's natural instincts.
